The Incredible Fashion Designer Coco Chanel

Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, or as many know her as, Coco Chanel, was born August 19th, 1883 in Saumur, a small city in France. She was born in a poorhouse to traveling salesman Albert Chanel and Jeanne Devolle. She had two sisters, Julie and Antoinette and three brothers, Alphonse, Lucien and Augustine.
When Coco was just twelve years old her mother died, leaving her father to care for the six children. He left a short time latter, and for the next seven years, Coco was in the orphanage of the Catholic monastery of Aubazine. Here she learned the trade of a seamstress.
During school vacations female relatives, in the provincial capital of Moulins, taught Coco how to sew much more elegant, than the nuns at the monastery were able to teach.
At the age of eighteen, she left the orphanage and began work for a local tailor. While working at the tailor shop she met Etienne Balsan, an English playboy, and began having an affair with him.
While working as a cafe and concert singer, Chanel adopted the name, Coco.
While Coco was living with Balsan, she began to design hats as a hobby. Her hats quickly caught the attention of the female Parisian elite. In 1909, with the help of Balsan and Arthur “Boy” Capel, another rich lover, Coco was able to open her own millinery, or hat shop called ”Chanel Modes.” It was located at 31 rue Cambon in Paris.
French actresses wore the hats Coco made. This helped her to get a reputation established. In 1913 at her new boutique in Deauville, France, Coco introduced her sportswear for women.
In 1923, the Chanel suit was launched. It was a boxy jacket made of woven wool with gold buttons and black trim, warm with a large pearl costume necklace. The skirt was of knee length with trim. A truly elegant suit.
In 1925, she introduced her signature cardigan jacket. Coco also brought out the little black dress in 1926 and not only made it very popular, but also versatile. Depending on how it was easily accessorized, it could be worn day or night.
Coco also introduces the bobbed hair style, pants for women, skiing accessories, she eliminated the use of the corset from women’s fashion, added the use of knit jersey and unvailed the women’s bathing suit. These are only a few of her accomplishments.
Coco also was a Hollywood fashion director. To attract women to the theater, Coco was asked to design costumes that would appeal to the women.
In 1923 Coco launched the first perfume to bear a designers name, Chanel No. 5. Pierre Wertheimer became her partner in the perfume business and the Wertheimers continue to control the perfume company today.
Her fashion empire, until her death, brought in over 0 million dollars a year.
In 1938, Coco decided to retire and for the next fifteen years, she moved back and forth between Vichy and Switzerland. During this time, she began seeing a Nazi officer named Hans Gunther Von Dincklage.
In 1954, she decided to make a come back and the Chanel suit once again caught the eyes and the pocket book, of women. Coco also introduced the pea jacket and bell-bottom pants for women.
In 1969, Katharine Hepburn, played Coco in a Broadway musical, “Coco” based on Coco Chanels life.
Coco Chanel worked up until her death. Coco died on January 10, 1971, in Paris, France at the age of 87.

Myths About Designer Clothing

There are two types of articles about designer clothing. Those from people who do wear designer clothing and those that do not. I wear a lot of designer clothing, and I see nothing wrong with wearing designer clothing. A lot of people get self-righteous and indignant and say that if you are having trouble paying bills, or you are house poor, or you are on welfare, or whatever your situation may be, then you should not wear designer clothing. A lot of those same people are hypocrites because they “invest” in other things that depreciate, just like designer clothing. At the same time, a lot of things that people merely assume about designer clothing are just flat out lies. Designers and advertisers have worked very well in conjunction with each other to create a mystique and create this special elite “club” around their brand. That is all smoke and mirrors. The following is a list of dos and donts, along with my own observations.
Designer clothing lasts longer
Designer clothing does not last longer. There are two types of people that wear designer clothing. That that treat it like a gem and those that treat it just like anything else in their closet. I tried the gem thing, but it just didn’t last that long for me. I was never that pretentious, that much beside myself or thought that much about myself or any material item. I will put designer clothing through the test. Some brands can take more abuse than others, but they all fare pretty well.
Many times designer clothing may seem as though it lasts longer because you are not wearing your size. Most of what I wore during the nineties I wore loose and far away from my skin. The only true wear and tear those clothes received was because I still washed in warm water back then. What I found is that I prefer light weight clothing, even in the winter. So I wash everything in cold. There is a lot that I am supposed to dry clean, but I will wash it in cold and hang it out to dry before I even think about seeing a dry cleaner. A light weight sweater may never need to be cleaned, same with a suit jacket. Heavy clothing, on the other hand, almost always needs to be cleaned. If you want to save money on cleaning, wear lighter layers that breathe better; less perspiration, less trips to the dry cleaners and less wear and tear from the washing machine.
Designer clothing is better quality
Nothing could be further from the truth. Most times, the same sweatshops are making clothes for everyone. So the same 3 year old that sewed on a button on something from Kmart sewed on that same button for something from Ralph Lauren. A lot of these major designers are just umbrellas for a lot of fancy stuff made from a lot of exotic sweatshops that may pay their work a dollar or two more. You will also find that the same companies refuse to release clothing under their own name.
Most stores that people take for granted, Kmart, WalMart, Target, Sears, JC Penney, Khols, all sell high quality clothing. I know because I have bought clothing from all of those stores, and in every case, their items lasted just as long as long as something I bought from the department store. What you are paying for is art. Honestly, you are paying for something that literally, looks better than something else. You aren’t paying for quality at all.
Designer clothing uses better materials
In the beginning nothing could be further from the truth. Most designers start out with awful materials, but great ideas. If you want fine linens and exotic materials, give a designer 10 years to get their act together and then buy their stuff after the party is over and all of the guests have left. For years I stayed away from Tommy Hilfiger because the materials just were not that good. To be honest they still aren’t that great, but that is another story.
On the other hand, new labels from existing designers are not that great either. Purple Label is still overpriced, Polo Jeans and Polo Sport were a failure of epic proportions. Another example I can think of is FUBU Platinum. Save your money; just because a designer puts out a new bridge label and it is hot at the moment you should still wait and see what happens with that label. In a lot of cases the label comes to a premature close. No label is big enough to fail.
Designer clothing is a better deal
The only time you can honestly state that you have scored a deal or a great investment is if you buy designer clothing on sale. If I have a choice between a designer item from an older label that uses great materials and has been consistent over the years that was on sale and the same price as someone else that is new I will choose the older label every time. If I have a choice between something that is used that is being sold for the same price as something brand new I will choose the used item over the new item. Not everything that is new is worth investing in. Designer clothing, in most cases, will last 50 years so I will pick something that a consumer may have worn for a season or two because you still have another 48 years to go. In most cases, I may tire of it as well and throw it back into the system, so someone else can enjoy it for 45 years. I was still able to enjoy the purchase just as much as I would have if it were new. Let someone else spend 0 for something that is worth when they walk out of the store.
Designer clothing is an investment
An investment in what exactly? Unless you are in the business of selling clothing and are buying wholesale how is designer clothing an investment? Once that clothing mixes in with the oils, lotions and perfumes you use and rubs up against your skin it isn’t worth anything to anyone else. That statement presumes that people are buying designer clothing that is conservative, and a lot of people do not buy conservative clothing, they buy the latest fads.
If you are dealing with older, more mature labels they may exploit the fads but find a way to give you something that is timeless and lasts over time. Take t-shirts for example, the latest designer t-shirt may have exotic, super light weight cotton and have a picture of a celebrity on the front of it. That is something you can wear 20 years from now, assuming you haven’t ripped up the t-shirt and it didn’t shrink and it doesn’t smell. But if all you care about is the fad, do not spend 0 for the t-shirt go to H and M and pay and go on about your business.
Designers are just as trendy as everyone else. Most times designers had something to do with starting the trend or were smart enough to capitalize on it and profit from it while the people who really did start that trend are still having a great time, but are not profiting from it. The whole thing about designer clothing is that the entire scene is just one big game. Sure you can go out and spend your hard earned money on the clothing, but you need to be part of the scene. You need to get invited to the right parties and meet the right people; you have to throw the best parties and know the right people. You need the right job and have to be in the right place. It is an expensive game to play and an even more difficult one to stay on top of. You have to read all of the right magazines, know about the right labels and be able to predict the trends before you become a victim of them. Every season things change.
The average person would be better off sticking with the few labels they are comfortable with instead of blowing their money on a game that they cannot profit from. I love fashion, but the emphasis on designer clothing and celebrity culture in America is ridiculous. Most people are burnt out from it all and just want to know that they are going to have food on their table. My life has changed since those days of the nineties, but I think that it is a positive change and that I am a better person for it. At the same time this thing has a way of calling you and sequestering you back into the void, and you might find it difficult to stay above the fray; just remember who you are and how far you have come.

A different top can change the entire look and feel of a pair of trousers!
At least one summer shirt is an essential item for the warmer months. If you have to dress smartly for work, during the summer you need a light, cotton shirt that will keep you cool. If you want to stand out from the crowd a little, steer clear of the standard colour options of white and blue and go for something a little more daring, such as pale yellow or even pink. Real men wear it, don’t you know! For dressed down affairs, a good few summery tee shirts fit the bill perfectly. T-shirts can be worn with anything; jeans, cords, or chinos. T-shirts can be perfectly casual and comfortable for a quick game of football or a pint and the pub, but will also serve well enough to wear out on an evening to a restaurant or club. Slogan tee shirts or vintage prints are especially popular at the moment.

The Sweet Scent of Designer Perfumes

Article by Sandra Tiffany

There are many different designer perfumes and colognes that are popular with men and women. Some of the most popular perfumes are those that are labeled and endorsed with celebrity names. There are many different well known celebrities that have come out with their own perfumes from which they are making large profits.
For instance, the scent, “Unforgivable” by Sean Jean is one of the best sellers in colognes for men. There are many different guys who wear it from teenage boys all the way up to senior citizens. I’ve even heard it said that you can even smell this scent in some nursing homes. Depending on where you shop for this cologne, you can normally get about 1.5 ounces for around .00. Although “Unforgivable” isn’t the cheapest cologne on the market it certainly isn’t the most expensive either.
There are, of course, many different popular designer perfumes for women. The “Be Delicious” collection by Donna Karen is very hot right now. This line of perfume comes in three different scents, and in three different colored bottles. You can find some of the scents in super stores or drug stores.
However, the newest “Fresh Blossom” scent of the “Be Delicious” collection can be found only in department stores and beauty retail establishments. There is also a line of “Be Delicious” for men, and it as well as “Fresh Blossom” can be purchased for around .00 for a 1 ounce bottle.
Everyone has their individual tastes, and therefore not every designer perfume or designer cologne smells good on, or to everybody. This means that it may take some trial and error to find the scent that is going to work the best for you.
Some other popular scents for men include “Gio” by Giorgio Armani, “Black Code” by Ralph Lauren, and “Cool Blue” by Nautica.
For women, other great buy designer perfumes that are quite popular are “Very Sexy for Her” by Victoria Secret, and “Chanel Number 5″ by Coco Chanel. Victoria Secret is a less expensive perfume to buy, whereas Chanel is a higher end perfume that can cost upwards of 0.00.
Heading to your local department store or super store is an easy way to experience some different scents, or you might be able to get some samples of the colognes and perfumes you want. After testing some of them at a store, you can then order designer perfumes or colognes online.

History of Italian Jewelry

The history of Italian jewelry is rich, diverse and passionate. Modern Italian jewelry designer draws from traditions in fine craftsmanship that dates back centuries. Almost every culture indulges in some form of body adornment, much of this is done in relation to a ceremonial purpose; religious affiliation, social status or family. This was no less true in Italy; however, there are some unique differences in the approach of the Italian designer to jewelry that is linked to the great role of Rome in world history. The campaigns that extended the power of the Roman empire to far corners of the world, resulted in different influences coming to bear on the Italian artistic design of jewelry.
In many of the works by classical Italian jewelry designers, you see traces of Egyptian, Greek and Asian culture. How the combination of these cultures impacted the development of designs, is easy to see from the discoveries of jewelry made during the ancient Etruscan period in southern Italy. From the 9th to 4th centuries B.C., these early Italian jewelry designers, whose gold jewelry designs have never been equaled in beauty, perfected the techniques that are still in use in making Italian jewelry today. A prime example of the value jewelers place on their craft is seen in the life of one of the best known 19th century Italian jewelry designers, Pio Fortuna Castellani, who studied and revived the Etruscan “granulation” technique for crafting gold jewelry. Castellani, among others throughout the history of Italian jewelry design, have infused passion into this craft of beauty, that in many regions of the country is almost an obsession. This is the main factor which has set their production apart from the rest of the world.
Gold has always been the most highly used metal in Italian jewelry; respecting the fact that the human body, mind and spirit has a strong, innate connection to gold, more than any other metal. Prized for its affinity to the color to the sun, our powerful lifegiver on earth, the attraction of gold is magnetic and was revered in ancient times. The demand for gold Italian jewelry of today has not lessened, but the wonderful Italian sterling silver jewelry cannot be ignored either. Now there are Italian jewelry designers that have chosen to work exclusively in the highest quality sterling silver, creating beautiful ornaments for every part of the body. The demand for Italian jewelry is the result of high production standards along with the originality, quality and diversity. The history of craftsmanship of Italian designer jewelry has always been highly valued, whether it was for gold, sterling silver or gemstone pieces.
Italian jewelry today continues to make fashion history with designs in bold and delicate gold, oversized and trendy sterling silver with diamonds or semi-precious gemstones. When you are ready to adorn your body with something beautiful, take advantage of the rich history of Italian jewelry to satisfy your every desire.
